MCRA Projects

Upcoming & Current Initiatives

David Park (Phase Two)

David Park is located in the middle of the MCRA District and has long been noted as a facility in need of enhancements.  The George Mudd Playground construction has been completed to make the play area accessible by replacing the sand area with a poured floor surface and new playground equipment. Phase Two will include additional parking and the addition of a covered picnic pavilion area.  Construction is set to begin summer 2019.

Winfield Boulevard

Located within a residential area but close to State Road 7, this roadway is often used as a cut through from the surrounding neighborhoods generating high traffic volume and complaints of speeding. The MCRA worked with the engineering firm Keith and Associates on the design of several traffic calming measures for consideration. The CRA is currently working on the design and installation of a neighborhood entranceway sign.

Wayfinding Signage

The CRA worked with Saltz Michelson Architects to develop a comprehensive and cohesive Wayfinding Signage Program to enhance the City’s image and identity, especially within the CRA District. The primary objective was to have a positive effect on the City of Margate’s sense of place and to improve overall navigation through the community and to its key destinations. The final designs are now complete and a formal bid will be issued for fabrication and installation of approximately 15 signs at key gateway and facility locations within the City and CRA.

Sports Complex

Design of a covered sports field and concession/restroom building to be located on vacant property at the entrance to the City Sports Complex on Banks Road was completed earlier this year. The open-air, covered field, almost an acre in size, will be multi-purpose for a variety of youth sports and other events in a weather-protected environment.  A Design/Build contract is currently being negotiated with construction expected to commence later this year. It is anticipated the project will be completed within 10 months after commencement.

Copans Road Median Landscape Improvements

A beautification project along Copans Road between State Road 7 and the eastern CRA Boundary was completed in June 2019. Landscape improvements to the median included the addition of flowering, colorful trees, palm trees, shrubbery, irrigation, soil and mulch.  The CRA is considering additional landscaping in this area.

Public Art Utility Box Project

The City and CRA have embarked on a public art program which includes the wrapping of utility boxes throughout the City, mostly located at or near intersections. Phase one of this project will include nine utility boxes along Atlantic Boulevard, Rock Island, and Copans Road within the city limits. Margate is seeking to expand its public art, and this project has the opportunity to beautify the City using already existing canvases that are primed for artwork.

Colonial Drive Roadway Improvements

Completed in January 2019, this project is in the northern part of the CRA District and includes the Northwest Medical Center. It provides for enhanced pedestrian and bicycle crossings to improve safety for hospital staff and visitors. Solar lit flashing beacons and other signage provide for a safer pedestrian crossing.  Landscaping and irrigation were also installed to beautify the median.

Ace Hardware Plaza Improvements

An overall plan to upgrade and enhance the appearance of this 45,000 square foot multi-tenant shopping plaza is underway and slated for substantial completion this summer. Renovations include lining of the stormwater drainage system in the parking lot, replacement of canopy lights and wall sconces, replacement of jalousie glass windows, sidewalk restoration, landscaping and irrigation, asphalt parking lot, mansard roof replacement, painting, installation of decorative stone, and signage.

Chevy Chase Plaza Improvements

This 46,000 square foot shopping center fronts State Road 7 and is also outdated and in need of upgrades. The renovation process has started and will include stormwater pipelining, asphalt, and striping of the parking lot, sidewalk repairs/painting, mansard roof repairs, roof coating, façade and roof painting, stonework on columns, lighting, signage, and landscaping work.

Atlantic Boulevard Beautification Project

The CRA is in the process of developing a scope of work for improvements to Atlantic Boulevard west of State Road 7 to the City limit. The CRA hopes to incorporate many different elements such as landscape, hardscape, signage, and improvements to the existing wall into this major project, which is slated to begin later this year.
